The University of Arizona proscenium-style Marroney Theater is one of the best places in the city to see a play. Yet, the theater is hidden within the UA Arts making it a hassle for visitors (many of whom are elderly) to find and access it.
The design solution is to take advantage of the adjacent underpass (one of the most occupied on campus) and its proximity to Tucson’s heavily used Speedway Boulevard. The main core (The Beacon of Light) connects the top rehearsal space/classroom, the middle atrium space, ground level public space and underground cafe. With the newly added seating space, strong established identity and easier accessibility, the Marroney Theater Extension will invite visitors to experience a play like never before.
